You don't know you need it, until you need it
Cindy
Cindy’s life changed after hearing 3 words – “you have cancer.”
Our accommodation service (formerly known as Under Our Roof) provides rural patients and their families subsidised or free accommodation to stay in Adelaide while receiving treatment.
A cancer or other diagnosis is heartbreaking, and for country patients, leaving their support networks and travelling to Adelaide for treatment can be a burden both emotionally and financially.
The Hospital Research Foundation Group – Patient & Family Accommodation (formerly known as Under Our Roof) eases this burden with four family-style homes for country patients and their families to stay while receiving care or treatment in Adelaide. These homes encourage patients to have their support networks around them, keeping everyone together during challenging and difficult times.
These homes have been made possible through the generous fundraising efforts of our community and corporate partners Jones Radiology.
The Hospital Research Foundation Group is pleased to offer these free services for people living with cancer, renal conditions, heart conditions, diabetes, stroke, Parkinson’s or a high-risk pregnancy.
Support patients living in rural areas – your donation can be directed to a specific area of need including our patient and family accommodation.

For country patients and their families*, the cost is $40 per night. If you are eligible for PATS (SA’s Patient Assistance Transport Scheme) and have a current healthcare or pension card, this cost will be fully covered, enabling free accommodation for cancer patients.
If you are eligible for PATS but don’t hold one of the above cards, there will be a once off $40 charge, payable on arrival to cover the first night’s cancer accommodation in Adelaide (in line with current PATS requirements).
For convenience, THRF Group bulk-bills PATS directly on your behalf. Consult your GP and specialist to assist you with PATS requirements and forms. For more information on PATS, visit www.countryhealthsa.sa.gov.au/pats
THRF Group is also an approved provider through the following schemes: Victoria VPTAS, NSW IPTAAS and NT PATS.
*There is no extra cost for additional family members.
Depending on availability, the homes have been designed for longer term stays of seven days or more.
The homes are equipped with most amenities and you will just need to bring food and your belongings. A linen package is available at a cost of $20 per stay and needs to be booked ahead of time, or alternatively you can bring your own linen. Hypoallergenic quilts and pillows are provided and laundry facilities are in each home.
