Finding Comfort During Cancer Treatment

Faced with a scary prostate cancer diagnosis, Kym and Leanne Krause found comfort in Under Our Roof accommodation for regional cancer patients.

At only 55 years old, Kym Krause had his world turned upside down when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer following a routine screening test last year.

Aside from the fear and anxiety Kym and wife Leanne were experiencing, they also live in the remote town of Western Flat, 3.5 hours from their treatment hospital in Adelaide.

Finding somewhere to stay during treatment is an additional burden for many regional cancer patients, but one that was eased when Kym and Leanne’s prostate nurse told them about Under Our Roof.

Under Our Roof Woodville living roomUnder Our Roof is a family-style accommodation program run by The Hospital Research Foundation Group.

It consists of four homes close to hospitals and public transport in Adelaide, and provides a place of comfort for country cancer patients and their families who have to travel for treatment.

Leanne couldn’t believe it when she successfully arranged for them to stay at an Under Our Roof home in Woodville West for the 10 days they expected to be in Adelaide.

“It was a godsend,” said Leanne.

“The house was beautiful. There was even enough room for our daughter and family to stay for a few days which meant a lot to us.”

Kym underwent a prostatectomy and while it was a difficult time, he and Leanne were grateful for the peace of mind of having a home away from home.

Then, after the initial 10-day period, Kym’s medical team said that he needed to remain in Adelaide for further treatment.

“I called The Hospital Research Foundation Group to tell them what had happened. They were so understanding and extended our stay for as long we needed.”

“We have been so fortunate in our cancer journey, and I hope there are many more success stories like ours.”

Kym’s story is also a testament to the early detection of cancer through routine prostate exams.

Thankfully he is now cancer-free, with a renewed lease on life and looking forward to the future.
