The Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS) provides accommodation subsidies of up to $40 (plus GST) for commercial accommodation, per person, per night. Concession card holders are automatically eligible for a subsidy for up to two nights’ stay. Non– concession card holders are required to pay the first night’s expenses in full but are automatically eligible for a subsidy for their second night’s stay. If you need to stay longer than two nights in commercial accommodation to attend multiple medical appointments, your medical specialist needs to authorise your total length of stay in order for subsidies to be provided for the additional nights.

To be eligible for PATS subsidies, you need to:

• be a permanent resident of South Australia
• be enrolled in Medicare and receive treatment claimable through Medicare
• not be receiving, or be eligible for, financial assistance for travel and accommodation through another provider, and have claimed any available benefits from your private health fund first, if applicable
• have an appointment with or receive treatment from the nearest recognised medical specialist or approved medical specialist service
• be travelling more than 100km from their residence to your appointment or treatment location.
