Vale Stanley Geebung

Stanley Geebung (1)

In July 2021 with sadness, we farewelled Indigenous artist Stanley Geebung –
a much-loved patient at Laurel Hospice. Stanley was a SAPS regular for palliative care treatment, delighting many with his colourful artworks and
cultural artefacts.

Born in 1956, Stanley was from the Bidjara/Gungarri people of Augathella in south-west Queensland. With the help of palliative carers, he was able to return to his traditional home with one of his six adult children, in the months prior to his passing.

Laurel Hospice Nurse Unit Manager Helen Walker said medical staff loved it when they helped people return to their home.

“We got him all geared up and he had two weeks here [in the hospice], got his pain under control and spoiled him rotten, and off he went for a trip to his country in Queensland – he loved it.”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to have crossed paths with Stanley and his partner Jan. Stanley’s gentle humour and talents will remain in the minds and hearts of many!
