Doing it for Donna! We were delighted to support Rob Barrachina and his family’s efforts in memory of his wife Donna, fundraising for Laurel Hospice and Southern Adelaide Palliative Services.
Donna sadly lost her battle with gastric cancer in January last year, aged just 48-years-old. Following Donna’s time under the care of Laurel Hospice staff and volunteers, Rob expressed his thanks for their compassionate support and what a difference it meant to Donna.
“Donna spent her last 30 days in the hospice with the wonderful doctors, nurses and volunteer staff. They made her time there as comfortable as possible as well as looking after myself and other family members,” Rob said.
Rob’s idea to hold a family fun bike ride on Saturday 29 January this year was especially poignant given it was exactly one year to the day since Donna died. With the firm support of family and friends, ‘Donz Epic Ride’ was born.
Keen participants including Donna and Rob’s children Aimee and Zac, helped raise $19,336 from generous supporters for palliative care – a staggering amount for this inaugural event!
Cheered on by supporters and enthusiastic members of the public, riders made their way from Happy Valley to Victor Harbor via Strathalbyn, returning to Happy Valley – an epic ride for Donna!
Rob and his passionate organising committee are already eyeing off next year’s January ride in Donna’s honour, to continue raising funds to support vital palliative care services, education and research.
“We are so lucky to have the most amazing friends and family by our side. They keep me smiling each and every day and support me and the kids more than they know.”
“The Foundation’s services and care made a huge difference to Donna, the kids and me. We won’t forget the impact they had,” Rob said.
